Enclosure (Large), Clara, Co. Kilkenny

Between the first Ordnance Survey cartographers tramping across County Kilkenny in 1839 and the revision teams who followed six decades later, a large portion of a prehistoric enclosure near Clara quietly disappeared.

The original six-inch map recorded a circular earthwork roughly 65 metres in diameter, a substantial feature of the kind typically associated with early medieval or prehistoric settlement. By the 1900 revision, the northeastern to southeastern arc had been levelled, reduced by farming or construction to an absence on the landscape, leaving only the southwestern to northeastern sweep still legible.

Circular enclosures of this scale are often ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland in use roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, though some examples are considerably older. What makes the Clara enclosure quietly interesting is the degree to which its partial survival is itself a record of change. The 1839 map catches it intact; the 1900 revision documents its partial destruction; satellite imagery viewed in 2020 confirms that the surviving arc of the perimeter remains visible on the ground. A field boundary running immediately outside the southern sector, and curving concentrically with it, suggests that later land division at least partly respected or was shaped by the older earthwork, even as other sections were being removed. A second enclosure of similar character sits approximately 190 metres to the southeast, raising the possibility that the two were related, perhaps part of a small cluster of enclosed settlements in the area.
