Enclosure, Lisrivis, Co. Galway

In the bogland of north Galway, there is a place that has given its name to the land around it, yet barely shows itself above the ground.

The townland of Lisrivis takes its name from this ancient enclosure, and what survives is, by any measure, modest: a rough subcircular outline, roughly 33 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, most of it collapsed or eroded into the soft, low-lying terrain.

Enclosures of this kind, often called ring forts or raths when they survive well, were once among the most common settlement forms in early medieval Ireland, typically defined by a bank, a ditch, and sometimes a stone wall. Here, the enclosing element was a drystone wall, dry-laid stone construction without mortar, though it has long since fallen in. An external fosse, a drainage or defensive ditch, can still be traced running from the south, around the west, and up to the north of the monument. Where the wall and fosse have vanished entirely, a degraded scarp, a low eroded slope in the ground, is all that marks the boundary. Two field walls, likely built in later centuries when the enclosure's original purpose was long forgotten, cut straight through the monument at its northern and southern edges, with no particular regard for what lay beneath or around them.

What makes the site quietly significant is not its condition but its persistence in local memory. The name Lisrivis preserves the word lios, the Irish term for such an enclosure, and the place has been identified locally as the specific monument from which the townland name derives. In a landscape where bog has swallowed a great deal, the name alone has kept the site from complete obscurity.
