Enclosure, Lurgabrack, Co. Donegal

On an elevated rocky knoll in Lurgabrack, County Donegal, lies a site known locally as 'Doongonaway', though you won't find this name on any Ordnance Survey maps from the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

The knoll rises about 20 metres across its uneven summit, offering commanding views across the landscape, particularly eastward over Sheephaven Bay. Its location, typical of defensive sites throughout northwest Donegal, suggests this was likely once home to a cashel; a type of stone fort commonly built in Ireland during the early medieval period.

The site sits on light soil punctuated by rocky outcrops, land that has long been given over to grazing rather than cultivation. While no visible traces of the enclosure remain today, the topography tells its own story. The elevated position would have provided both defensive advantages and clear sightlines across the surrounding countryside, essential features for any fortified dwelling. Such locations were carefully chosen by their builders, who understood the strategic value of height and visibility in an era when local conflicts and cattle raids were common occurrences.

This description of the Doongonaway site comes from the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey documented field antiquities across the county spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, preserving knowledge of sites that might otherwise be forgotten. Though the physical remains at Lurgabrack may be absent, the landscape itself continues to hint at the human stories that once unfolded on this rocky prominence overlooking the bay.
