In the pastoral landscape on the northern side of Malin More valley in County Donegal, archaeologists have documented the site of a mysterious enclosure that once appeared on Victorian Ordnance Survey maps but has since vanished from the visible landscape.

This enigmatic feature, catalogued as SMR 89:2, represents just one element of a remarkably rich archaeological tapestry in the townland, which includes everything from megalithic tombs to ancient field systems preserved beneath the bog.

The area came under archaeological scrutiny in 2002 when plans emerged to develop an eighteen-hole golf course for Óstán Ghleann Cholm Cille. During the subsequent excavations, led by Martin A. Timoney, the team made fascinating discoveries whilst searching for traces of the lost enclosure. Though the enclosure itself remained elusive, likely obliterated by centuries of agricultural activity including its use as a vegetable garden for a 19th-century coastguard station and later the hotel, the archaeologists did uncover evidence of pre-bog field walls. One particularly intriguing wall, buried beneath 30 centimetres of peat, measured 1.8 metres wide and consisted of metamorphic stones that appeared to have been dumped rather than carefully constructed, raising questions about its original purpose and effectiveness as a boundary marker.

The investigation revealed how dramatically this landscape has transformed over millennia. Where golf greens now stretch across manicured lawns, ancient peoples once divided the land with stone walls that were subsequently swallowed by advancing peat bogs. The six-chamber megalithic tomb complex in the valley bottom and the pre-bog field systems first identified by L.N.W. Flanagan in 1974 speak to thousands of years of human occupation, whilst the more recent history of coastguard stations and hotel vegetable gardens shows how each generation has reimagined and reshaped this corner of Donegal to suit their needs.
