Enclosure, Remeen, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Remeen in County Kilkenny, a circular enclosure roughly 43 metres in diameter sits quietly in the landscape, its outline first captured on the Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1839.

Enclosures of this kind, sometimes the remains of a ringfort or an early medieval settlement boundary, have a habit of surviving not because anyone set out to preserve them, but because the lines of later ownership happened to follow their edges, keeping the shape legible long after whatever stood inside had disappeared.

What makes the Remeen enclosure particularly worth noting is the way administrative and agricultural boundaries appear to have wrapped themselves around it over the centuries. The 1839 map shows a barony boundary, the line dividing two of the old territorial divisions used in Irish administration since the medieval period, running northwest to southeast along the monument's southern edge. Field boundaries track its eastern side and extend from its northwestern quadrant. By the time the 1900 revision was made, those same lines had shifted slightly in character, with a townland boundary now defining the southern edge and a field boundary tracing the enclosure's shape. The monument itself may have been reduced to little more than a crop mark or a slight rise in the ground, yet the surrounding landscape had effectively drawn around it, preserving its geometry in the framework of property and parish.
