The site at Umrycam in the Fanad West Electoral Division appears only as a ghostly outline on the Ordnance Survey’s 6-inch maps, those meticulous Victorian documents that captured Ireland’s archaeological heritage before much of it disappeared beneath the plough or succumbed to time.

This lost enclosure occupied what was described as good grazing land, suggesting it may have served an agricultural purpose for the community that built it. Ringforts and enclosed settlements like this one dotted the Irish countryside for centuries, typically dating from the early medieval period, though without excavation it’s impossible to pinpoint exactly when this particular structure was constructed or abandoned. The circular earthwork would have consisted of a bank and ditch, possibly topped with a wooden palisade, enclosing an area where people lived, worked, and kept their livestock safe.

The documentation of this site comes from the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, a comprehensive catalogue compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. This survey represents one of the most thorough attempts to record Donegal’s archaeological heritage, spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. Whilst the physical remains at Umrycam have been lost, the survey ensures that knowledge of the enclosure’s existence and location remains part of the county’s historical record, a reminder of the countless settlements that once shaped this Atlantic coastline.
