In the townland of Drung near Malin in County Donegal, archaeologists uncovered a Bronze Age cemetery containing three cist graves; stone-lined burial chambers that were commonly used across Ireland during this period.

The excavations revealed the remains of an adult male, an adult female and an infant, who appear to have been buried within a short time of one another, suggesting they may have been members of the same family or community group who died around the same time.

The burials weren’t without their grave goods, offering a glimpse into Bronze Age burial customs and craftsmanship. Among the finds was a bronze awl, a sharp tool typically used for piercing leather or textiles, and a piece of rock crystal, which may have held spiritual or decorative significance for these ancient people. Perhaps most intriguing was the discovery of a Bronze Age pygmy cup, a tiny ceramic vessel often found in Bronze Age burials across Britain and Ireland, though their exact purpose remains a mystery to archaeologists.

These discoveries, excavated and documented by Rynne in 1963, form part of the broader archaeological landscape of County Donegal, where prehistoric sites dot the countryside. The flat cemetery at Drung represents just one piece of the complex puzzle of Bronze Age life in Ireland, when communities were transitioning from stone to metal tools and developing increasingly sophisticated burial practices that reflected their beliefs about death and the afterlife.
