Fulacht fia, Carrowfree, Co. Clare

Scattered across the Irish countryside in their thousands, fulachtaí fia are among the most common and least celebrated prehistoric monuments in the country, and yet most people walk past them without a second glance.

The one at Carrowfree in County Clare is typical in that quiet, anonymous way: a low horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone, dark-soiled and unassuming, sitting in the landscape as it has for perhaps three or four thousand years.

A fulacht fia, broadly speaking, is a Bronze Age cooking site. The classic interpretation holds that stones were heated in a fire, then dropped into a water-filled trough, bringing the water rapidly to the boil. The shattered, heat-fractured stones were discarded into a mound around the trough after each use, and it is that accumulated rubble which survives today as the characteristic crescent shape. The Irish countryside contains an estimated four thousand or more of these sites, with particularly dense concentrations in Munster, the province in which Clare sits. They tend to cluster near water, often beside streams or in low-lying ground where a natural trough could be dug and would hold water. Some researchers have argued they served purposes beyond cooking, possibly including textile processing or bathing, though the debate continues among archaeologists.
