Fulacht fia, Dreenagh, Co. Cork

In a marshy corner of Dreenagh in north Cork, a low horseshoe of blackened earth curves around a well, its waterlogged opening facing south-east.

The mound measures roughly 18 metres long, 17 metres wide, and barely half a metre high, modest dimensions that disguise what it represents: a fulacht fia, one of Ireland's most common yet least understood prehistoric monument types.

A fulacht fia is a burnt mound, the accumulated debris of repeated episodes of heating stones in fire and plunging them into a water-filled trough to bring the water to a boil. The process leaves behind a characteristic spread of fire-cracked, heat-shattered stone that builds up into a mound over time, typically crescent or horseshoe-shaped because the trough sits at the open centre. These sites are found in their thousands across Ireland, almost always in low-lying, wet ground near a reliable water source. Here, the well at the mound's heart suggests the water supply was not merely opportunistic but perhaps central to why this particular spot was chosen and returned to. The waterlogged condition of the opening has helped preserve the site's form, though it also complicates any close inspection of what lies beneath the surface. The purpose of fulachta fia remains genuinely contested among archaeologists; cooking, textile processing, bathing, and brewing have all been proposed, and it is quite possible that different sites served different functions at different times.
