Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Scattery Island, Co. Clare

On the eastern shore of Scattery Island, a small graveyard holds a quiet distinction that sets it apart from the island's other burial grounds: it is the only one where people from the mainland were also laid to rest.

That detail alone suggests something worth pausing over, a place where the usual boundary between island community and outside world was quietly set aside, at least in death.

The graveyard occupies a trapezoidal enclosure of roughly 52 metres east to west and between 27 and 44 metres north to south, bounded by a low masonry wall. Burials here span from around 1810 to 1999, though much of the visible evidence has been altered or removed. Most headstones have been taken away, particularly to the west of the medieval church known as Templenamarve, which sits within the graveyard itself and where recumbent slabs, stone markers laid flat rather than upright, remain inside. To the south, further stones have been laid flat on gravelled ground. The church's Irish name, Templenamarve, points to a far older presence on this site than the nineteenth-century burials suggest. In 2000, a foreshore survey recorded human remains visible in an exposed section immediately to the east of the graveyard, a reminder that what lies beneath does not always stay contained by its walls.

Scattery Island sits in the Shannon Estuary near Kilrush, and access is by seasonal ferry. The graveyard is protected as a national monument in state care, and visitors should expect a site that has been managed rather than left to grow over, with seeded ground where headstones once stood and gravelled areas where others were laid down. The absence of so many markers gives the place an unusual quality, more open than most old graveyards, but no less layered for it.
