Graveslab, Eanach Dhúin, Co. Galway

A graveslab broken into three pieces and left in the corner of a ruined annexe might seem like the kind of thing that gets overlooked, but this particular stone, tucked into the north-east corner of a small addition to the oldest church at Annaghdown in County Galway, carries decoration that rewards a closer look.

Running down the centre of its fragments are two incised lines that open, at the eastern tip, into a trefoil. Just south of that trefoil, cut into the stone, is a triskele enclosed within a circle, a three-armed spiral motif with roots in early medieval art that here appears in a late medieval context, quietly out of step with its own era.

The slab is just under two metres long and tapers slightly, narrower at the east end than the west, a common enough feature in medieval grave markers. It is comparatively thin at ten centimetres, which may help explain why it eventually fractured into three. Based on the style of its decoration, the stone is thought to date from somewhere between the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It lies within the grounds of Annaghdown, a site with a long ecclesiastical history on the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and its position in an annexe off the south side of what is considered the earliest church on the complex places it at the older, quieter end of a site that accumulated buildings across several centuries. The combination of the trefoil and the triskele on a slab of this period is unusual; the triskele in particular belongs to a decorative vocabulary more commonly associated with much earlier stonework, and its reappearance here suggests either a deliberate archaism or a local carving tradition that kept older forms alive well past their fashion elsewhere.
