Tombs & Memorials
In the small Clare townland of Meelick, a graveslab sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of object that rewards those who know to look for it.
Graveslabs are among the more understated survivals of early medieval and later Irish ecclesiastical culture: flat stone markers, sometimes carved with crosses, interlace, or inscriptions, laid over burial plots to identify the dead or simply to mark that someone considered the ground beneath worth remembering. They vary enormously in age and ambition, from plainly cut slabs with little more than a ringed cross to more elaborate pieces carrying figural work or legible names.
