Graveyard, Edenmore (Clonleigh North Ed), Co. Donegal

This atmospheric site is believed to mark the location of an early ecclesiastical settlement dating back to the 6th century. The graveyard contains the fragmentary remains of a medieval church, with portions of its north and south walls still standing as testament to centuries of worship and community life.

The church ruins reveal fascinating architectural details despite their weathered state. The north wall, built of rubble masonry, stretches 6.1 metres long and rises to 4.15 metres high, whilst the opposing south wall measures 4.75 metres in length and 4.5 metres in height. Both walls feature blocked-up windows with distinctive segment-headed rear-arches; the south wall’s window still preserves traces of the original wicker centering on its soffit. The church’s internal width measured 6.8 metres, though no visible traces of the east or west gables remain. The south wall has been incorporated into the graveyard boundary, and a curious sub-rectangular projection of the graveyard wall some 9.7 metres to the east may have once been associated with the church structure.

Recent conservation work by Donegal County Council has uncovered remarkable medieval treasures previously hidden in the soil. Three fragments of carved medieval mouldings have emerged near the church ruins on the eastern side of the graveyard, along with a striking recumbent slab measuring 1.68 metres long. This tapered stone slab bears a deeply carved Maltese cross, 32 centimetres square, with a raised central boss 9 centimetres in diameter; a powerful symbol of the site’s enduring religious significance. These discoveries, still partially buried, offer tantalising glimpses into the artistic and spiritual heritage of this ancient ecclesiastical settlement.
