The ruins of Kilbarron Church stand as a testament to late medieval ecclesiastical architecture in County Donegal, dating from the 15th or 16th century.

This simple rectangular church, measuring 10.3 metres by 4.9 metres internally, was constructed from squared boulder rubble with carefully crafted ashlar quoins at the corners. The structure retains much of its original form, with the north and south walls rising to approximately 3 metres in height, whilst the western gable survives to its full height, complete with some original coping stones on the northern side. A narrow rectangular window with a wide splay illuminates the upper section of the western gable, and five joist holes in the opposing walls indicate where a wooden gallery once stood, likely accessed from the northwest corner.

Two pointed doorways provided entry to the church; one positioned midway along the south wall and another at the eastern end of the north wall. Both doorways feature splayed ingoings with lintelled tops and evidence of their original wooden fittings, including bond holes for supporting beams and sockets for latches and draw bars. The eastern gable, standing 2.4 metres high, shows no evidence of windows, though a collapsed altar at its base marks where religious services once took place. Fire damage is evident on several interior surfaces, particularly the western gable and adjoining wall sections, as well as the southeast corner, where the masonry shows characteristic spalling from intense heat.

Beyond the church walls, the ruins of what may have been a priest’s residence abut the north wall, though these remains are now largely reduced to foundation lines measuring roughly 8.8 by 5.9 metres internally and are considerably overgrown. The church sits within a now featureless and disused graveyard, which local tradition suggests marks the location of an early ecclesiastical site that predates the current structure. This layering of religious significance, from early Christian foundations through medieval construction to eventual abandonment, tells a story common to many rural Irish churches, where centuries of worship have left their mark in stone and memory.
