Graveyard, Kilkenny, Co. Donegal

On the south side of the Gweebarra river inlet in County Donegal, the fragmentary ruins of an old church stand quietly in the middle of a modern rectangular graveyard.

Graveyard, Kilkenny, Co. Donegal

Known locally as the Chapel of Ease to Inishkeel, this modest structure was described by the 18th-century bishop and traveller Richard Pococke in 1752 as “an old church called Kilkenny”. What remains today are the central portions of the north and south walls, rising just 2.2 metres high, whilst the east and west gables have been reduced to grass-covered footings. The rubble-built church originally measured 9.6 by 4.6 metres internally, and though its exact age remains uncertain, the splayed ingoing of a window can still be seen at the western end of the south wall.

The church sits within a far older sacred landscape. To the north and west of the modern graveyard, you can trace the outline of a curving enclosure that would have originally formed a complete circle with the church at its centre. This ancient boundary consists of a grassed-over wall, now only about 25 centimetres high but up to 1.4 metres wide, with sections of the original wall footings still visible. The enclosure wall was cleverly built along the edge of a natural slope down to the sea, and a 3.5-metre gap on the western side shows clear evidence of an original entrance, with the southern side turning inward for over 7 metres.

The site offers a glimpse into centuries of continuous religious use, from its possible early Christian origins through to the present day. Set on fair pasture land, these ruins represent a type of ecclesiastical site common throughout Ireland, where successive generations have worshipped and buried their dead in the same sacred space. The archaeological survey notes that whilst the eastern and southern portions of the original circular enclosure have been lost, likely destroyed when the modern graveyard was established, the surviving features paint a clear picture of how this coastal religious site would have appeared in its heyday.
