House – indeterminate date, Killeen, Co. Mayo

In the reclaimed pasture of Killeen, County Mayo, there may or may not be a house.

That is, in essence, all that can be said with confidence. It was recorded in 1997 on the basis of local knowledge gathered six years earlier, and when inspectors visited the site that same year, they found nothing. No wall, no foundation, no hollow in the ground. Just grass.

This kind of entry sits at a curious edge of the archaeological record. Reclaimed pasture, land that has been drained, levelled, and turned over to grazing, has a tendency to swallow earlier features entirely. A house, depending on its construction, its age, and how thoroughly the land around it was worked, can vanish without leaving so much as a cropmark. What remains is the memory of it, passed on by someone local who knew, or believed they knew, that something once stood there. The Record of Monuments and Places, which gives this site its formal existence, was designed in part to catch exactly these cases, things that local tradition preserves but that the ground no longer shows. The date of the structure is listed as indeterminate, meaning no one was able to say with any certainty when it was built or used.
