This modest dwelling, built in a roughly circular shape with an interior diameter of 5.4 metres, sits on wet, rushy upland terrain. Though time has not been kind to the structure, its low dry stone walls, measuring 0.9 metres thick and standing just 0.2 metres high, still outline where people once lived and worked. The considerable amount of collapsed rubble makes it difficult to fully appreciate the original architecture, and whilst there might be traces of an internal cross wall, the fallen stones obscure most of these details. Curiously, archaeologists have found no clear evidence of an entrance, leaving questions about how residents accessed their home.

This isn’t an isolated find; 170 metres to the northwest lies another hut site, suggesting this was once a small community rather than a solitary dwelling. Both structures appear to be part of a broader field system that spreads across the landscape, indicating organised agricultural activity. The contemporaneous nature of the settlement and field boundaries paints a picture of early farmers who carved out a living from these upland slopes, managing their land and livestock in what would have been a challenging environment.

Today, these archaeological remains serve as subtle markers of human resilience and adaptation. Whilst the structures themselves are poorly preserved, they represent the everyday lives of people who shaped this landscape long before modern Ireland took form. The site was documented by archaeologist Caimin O’Brien in July 2010, ensuring that even as the stones continue to weather and collapse, the knowledge of this ancient settlement endures.
