Settlement Sites
On the lower, north-facing slopes of Fananierin Mountain in County Wicklow, a small ring of collapsed stones sits in rough grazing land above the Drumgoff Brook valley.
It is easy to overlook, measuring only 2.8 metres in diameter, with a wall that has tumbled to a height of no more than 30 centimetres. Yet that modest circle, its stones still holding roughly the width of their original wall, marks out what was once a circular hut, with what appears to be an entrance gap oriented towards the northeast.
The site may belong to a cluster of similar structures in the area. In 1937, the antiquarian Liam Price recorded what he described as a number of small rings of stones in this part of Wicklow, and it is possible this hut is among those he observed. Circular stone huts of this kind are found widely across upland Ireland, though their dates and functions vary considerably; some are associated with seasonal pastoral activity, others with earlier settlement, and without excavation it is rarely possible to say which. Several related sites have been recorded nearby, suggesting this corner of the Glenmalure uplands repays closer attention than it typically receives.
