Hut site, Pinnacle, Co. Wicklow

On a south-facing slope near the Pinnacle in County Wicklow, the remains of a small stone hut sit on a slight natural terrace, oriented carefully to catch the light and views across the landscape to the south.

It is easy to walk past such a feature without registering what it is; the wall stands on average only about thirty centimetres high, and the uprights that form much of its circuit have the look of field stones rather than deliberate construction. But the plan is coherent and intentional: roughly oval, measuring 3.5 metres east to west and just under four metres north to south, with walls up to 1.2 metres thick in places.

The southern side of the hut is its most legible. An entrance just over a metre wide is framed by two upright facing stones that rise to approximately half a metre, taller than the surrounding wall, giving the opening a modest formality. To the north, where the slope presumably offered some shelter, the builders added a second course of stones to compensate for the terrain. Hut sites of this kind, simple dry-stone enclosures used for seasonal shelter by herders or others working upland ground, are scattered across the Irish landscape, and this one is not alone on the hillside: a second hut site lies roughly twenty-three metres to the south-west, suggesting that whoever used this place did so in some number, or returned to it over time.
