Rising from the grounds of Killaha House in County Kerry stands a remarkable late 16th or early 17th century tower house that once belonged to the O'Donoghue of Glenflesk clan.

This four-storey rectangular fortress, measuring roughly 15 metres east to west and 11 metres north to south, was built from random-rubble limestone held together with gritty lime mortar. Though it stands nearly complete, the northeast corner has collapsed, taking with it the spiral staircase that once connected all four floors. The Down Survey maps of 1655-6 show the tower with what appears to be a lower, wider extension on one side, though no trace of this addition remains today.

The tower’s internal layout reveals the practical considerations of its builders, with each floor divided between a main western chamber and a smaller eastern room. Entry is through a ground floor doorway on the east wall, where remnants of a yett-hole in the south jamb hint at the defensive measures once in place. The entrance lobby, defended by a double-cross gun loop, leads to a guardroom covered by a rounded stone vault; one of the few vaulted spaces in the building. The main ground floor chamber features an impressive fireplace complete with a stone-lined domed bread oven, whilst the upper floors each boast their own fireplaces with increasingly elaborate surrounds. The second and third floor hearths display particularly fine cut-limestone work, with moulded jambs rising to rounded corbels decorated with geometric panels.

Windows throughout the tower show the architectural tastes of the period, progressing from simple lintelled embrasures with splayed sides on the lower levels to more sophisticated designs above. The second floor’s west-facing window features a rectangular light divided by two mullions and topped with a hood-moulding, whilst various defensive features like gun loops and bartizans, though now mostly ruined, once provided both protection and commanding views across the surrounding landscape. The tower rises to wall-walk level, though the crenellations have long since vanished, and tall square chimney stacks still project from the centre of the south wall and the western gable, testament to the numerous hearths that once warmed this impressive fortress home.
