Kilns
Mooghaun in County Clare is best known for its extraordinary Iron Age hillfort, one of the largest in western Europe, but tucked somewhere within the same townland is a lime kiln, a structure of a very different era and purpose.
Lime kilns were once common across the Irish countryside, used to burn limestone at high temperatures to produce quicklime, which farmers spread on acidic soils to improve fertility or mixed with water and sand to make mortar for building. Most fell out of use during the nineteenth or early twentieth century as cheaper, industrially produced lime became available, and the majority have since crumbled quietly back into the landscape.
