On the western side of a north-south stream in Ballynaraha, County Waterford, the remains of what may have been Kilnacarriga Castle stand on a steep south-facing slope within an old farmyard.

When the antiquarian John O’Donovan surveyed the site around 1840, he recorded it as a two-storey dwelling house with internal dimensions of approximately 12 metres running north to south and 5.5 metres east to west. Today, only fragments remain; a peculiar Z-shaped section of wall that consists of two connected walls measuring about 4.5 metres by 4 metres, reaching up to 4 metres in height, along with traces of what was once a third wall.

The structure’s history remains somewhat mysterious, as no historical documents definitively refer to a castle at this location. Archaeological evidence suggests it may have been constructed as a 17th-century house rather than a medieval fortress, though its exact purpose and origins continue to puzzle historians. The building’s position on such a severe slope would have made construction challenging, yet its builders clearly considered the location worth the effort, perhaps for defensive advantages or to overlook the stream valley below.

The site was formally documented in the Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford in 1999, drawing on O’Donovan’s earlier observations from the Ordnance Survey of 1841. These ruins offer a tantalising glimpse into Waterford’s architectural past, representing either a modest castle or substantial house that once commanded this hillside position. Though time and weather have reduced it to fragmentary walls, the site continues to intrigue those interested in Ireland’s lesser-known historical structures.
