Knockalough Castle, Knockalough, Co. Clare

Built sometime during the 15th or 16th century, Knockalough Castle is a typical example of the fortified residences that once dotted the Irish landscape, serving as both defensive structures and symbols of local power. The castle consists of a rectangular tower that rises approximately four storeys high, with thick limestone walls that have weathered centuries of Atlantic storms.

The castle’s design follows the standard tower house blueprint that became popular across Ireland during the late medieval period. These structures were built by Gaelic lords and Norman settlers alike, offering a practical solution to the need for defendable homes in an era of constant territorial disputes. Knockalough’s walls feature the characteristic narrow windows, known as loops or slits, which provided light whilst maintaining security; larger windows on the upper floors suggest these spaces were used for living quarters, where residents could afford to prioritise comfort over defence.

Today, the castle stands as a roofless ruin, its interior floors long since collapsed, leaving only the sturdy outer walls to mark its presence in the landscape. The structure is accessible to visitors, though care should be taken when exploring as the stonework, whilst remarkably resilient, shows its age in places. Local tradition suggests the castle may have connections to the O’Brien clan, who held significant power in Clare for centuries, though definitive historical records about its original builders and inhabitants remain elusive. Its position offers commanding views across the surrounding countryside, a reminder of why this location was chosen by its medieval builders.
