This early medieval ringfort appears as a rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 48 metres north to south and 36 metres east to west. First documented on the 1936 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the site is bounded by a road to the west, a townland boundary to the south, and defined by a shallow fosse; a defensive ditch roughly eight metres wide and just under a metre deep; along its northern and eastern sides.

The ringfort’s defensive features are still visible today, though somewhat weathered by time. An internal bank can be traced along the northern and eastern edges, now mainly evident through differential growth patterns in the vegetation rather than as a standing earthwork. The fosse that once provided protection for the site’s inhabitants remains a clear marker of the enclosure’s boundaries, whilst a stream runs along the outside of the southern boundary, following the natural townland division.

These ringforts, known locally as lios or rath, were typically farmsteads of prosperous families during the early medieval period, roughly from the 5th to 12th centuries. The rectangular shape of this particular example is somewhat unusual, as most ringforts in Ireland are circular or oval. Its position on sloping ground with good visibility across the surrounding landscape would have been deliberately chosen, offering both defensive advantages and practical benefits for farming activities. The site was formally recorded in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, Volume 4, published in 2000, with updates added in 2009 to reflect ongoing research into these important remnants of Ireland’s rural past.
