Burial Grounds

Lisheenkyle, Lisheenkyle, Co. Galway

In the fields of north Galway, there is a patch of ground that a landowner was quietly told never to touch.

No marker identifies it. No mound or earthwork breaks the surface. It exists now almost entirely as an absence, held in place by a whispered instruction passed from one owner to the next: leave this field alone, because people are buried here.

The place is recorded under the name Lisheenkyle, a townland in County Galway, and the name itself carries some weight. "Lisheen" is a diminutive of "lios", the Irish word for a ringfort or enclosed settlement, suggesting something circular and bounded once stood here. The first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map names it plainly as Lisheenkyle; by the time the second edition was published in 1896, the cartographers had added the words "Site of" before the name. That small editorial change tells its own story: within the span of a few decades in the nineteenth century, whatever earthwork had defined the place disappeared from the landscape, levelled or eroded to the point where only the name remained. The surrounding fields have since been reclaimed by the current landowner, yet one field has been left as it is, in deference to the tradition of burial associated with the ground.

What that tradition refers to specifically is not recorded in any detail that survives. It may connect to the earthwork itself, which is classified separately in archaeological records, or it may be older and looser, the kind of local knowledge that attaches to a place and outlasts the physical evidence. Either way, the field persists, undisturbed, in a landscape that has otherwise been thoroughly worked over. The archaeology is gone, or at least invisible. What remains is the habit of leaving it alone.
