In the rough grazing lands of Lismonilleen, Lackeen, County Cork, lies an intriguing earthwork enclosure that offers a glimpse into Ireland's archaeological past.

This trapezium-shaped site measures 76 metres from north to south, with the northern side stretching 59.6 metres east to west, whilst the southern side spans 35 metres. The enclosure is defined by an earthen bank that rises to about half a metre on the interior side and 1.2 metres on the exterior, accompanied by an outer fosse approximately one metre deep. A second, shallower fosse runs roughly 3 metres beyond the first, creating a double-defensive feature that’s now marked by rushes growing along its length, except at the northeast corner.

The earthwork shows varying states of preservation around its perimeter. The eastern bank remains the most intact, with a break at its northern end, whilst the southern bank sits noticeably lower than the others. The western bank appears low and wide, interrupted by two gaps; one near the southern end measuring 4 metres wide, and another near the northern end at 2.1 metres wide. The northern bank features a 7-metre break close to its western end, now partially blocked by a stone wall that leaves just a metre-wide gap. East of this opening, the bank widens with a raised outer face and a shallow depression on the inside. Interestingly, a ruined lime kiln has been incorporated into the northeast corner of the bank, suggesting later industrial use of the site.

The interior of the enclosure bears evidence of quarrying activity, with numerous pits pocking the ground surface. Historical mapping from the 1937 Ordnance Survey shows a stream once flowed from the northwest corner, eventually joining the Awbeg River approximately 1.26 kilometres to the north. This combination of defensive earthworks, later industrial additions, and evidence of quarrying suggests a site that has seen multiple phases of use throughout its history, each leaving its mark on this Cork landscape.
