Lismoreeva, Loughaunnaman, Co. Mayo

There is nothing left of Lismoreeva to trip over, and yet the site refuses to disappear entirely.

What was once a bivallate rath, a roughly circular earthwork enclosure defined by two concentric banks and ditches, has been levelled, most likely by agricultural improvement sometime before 1984. And yet the ground remembers. A roughly circular area of around 40 to 45 metres in diameter still shows up as a patch of differential vegetation growth, the kind of subtle variation in grass colour and texture that marks where earthworks once sat, where soil was disturbed, compacted, or built up over centuries.

The site appears by name on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of both 1838 and 1916, labelled as Lismoreeva and recorded there as a bivallate enclosure with a diameter of between 25 and 30 metres. Raths, also known as ringforts, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, typically associated with early medieval settlement from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and were used as enclosed farmsteads by families of some local standing. The bivallate form, with its double circuit of earthworks, generally indicates a site of greater status or defensive concern than a single-banked example. What made Lismoreeva's position particularly considered was its relationship to the surrounding landscape: it sits on the level top of a natural rise in undulating terrain, with the fall of ground to the north giving additional height to whoever occupied it. The views stretch most extensively to the north-east, across open pasture and bog. It is not alone in this landscape either. Another rath sits on higher ground roughly 120 metres to the north-west, and a further enclosure lies about 135 metres to the south-east, suggesting this was once a cluster of related or contemporary sites rather than an isolated homestead.
