On a gentle rise in the Galway pastureland stands Lydacan House, a complex architectural puzzle that tells the story of centuries of Irish building traditions.

Lydacan House, An Laigheachán, Co. Galway

At its heart lies a three-storey rectangular tower house dating from medieval times, measuring approximately 6.5 metres long by 5.5 metres wide. Though poorly preserved when surveyed in 1993, the structure still retained fascinating original features, including traces of a spiral staircase in the northwest corner and the ghostly outline of a pointed arch doorway in the southwest wall; likely the tower’s original entrance.

The tower house was later incorporated into the northern portion of a two-storey house, with numerous cut stone fragments from the original tower recycled into this newer addition. This practice of repurposing older structures was common in Ireland, where successive generations would adapt and expand existing buildings rather than starting afresh. The defensive nature of the original complex is evident from the surviving elements of a bawn wall, a fortified enclosure typical of Irish tower houses. Gun loops from this defensive wall can still be spotted in the property boundary approximately 28 metres to the east, serving as a reminder of more turbulent times when such fortifications were necessary.

Unfortunately, sections of the tower house, later house, and bawn were demolished in 1992, prompting local authorities to issue a preservation order that same year to protect what remained. The site represents an important piece of Galway’s architectural heritage, showing the evolution from medieval defensive structures to more domestic dwellings, whilst preserving tangible links to both periods in Irish history.
