Macetown Castle stands at the northern edge of a gentle rise, overlooking what remains of the abandoned settlement of Macetown approximately 75 metres to the north.

The parish church lies about 50 metres to the southeast, creating a small cluster of historical ruins in this quiet corner of County Meath. Today, the castle appears as little more than a cairn of collapsed stones, though careful examination reveals portions of what was once the northwest corner of a tower house poking through the rubble. The surviving fragment measures roughly 4.8 metres east to west and 3.2 metres north to south, offering just a hint of the structure’s original footprint.

The castle’s history is closely tied to the marriage alliance between two prominent families. In the late 16th century, Sir Christopher Cheevers of Ballyhealy Castle in County Wexford married Anna Plunkett, bringing the Macetown estate into his possession. Cheevers, who reportedly died in 1591, became a substantial landowner in the area; by 1640, according to the Civil Survey of 1654-6, the family controlled 290 acres at Macetown and another 140 acres at neighbouring Painestown, effectively encompassing the entire parish.

One of the most intriguing losses from the castle is a decorated fireplace mantel that once bore witness to this union. Documented in de Noyer’s 19th-century drawings, the mantel featured carved vine leaves alongside the combined arms of the Plunkett and Cheevers families. An inscription proclaimed the Cheevers family motto “EN. DIEV. MA. FIAVNC” (In God, my hope) in French, along with the names “CHRISTOFER CHEVER RMIG ET DME ANE PLVNKKET.” This carved stone, which would have provided valuable insight into the castle’s inhabitants and their aspirations, has since vanished, leaving only the historical record of its existence.
