On a plateau overlooking the Funshion River, about 200 metres to the south, stand the weathered remains of Manning Castle.

Manning Castle, Manning, Co. Cork

What survives today is fragmentary; a rectangular tower reduced to around three metres in height, its southern wall stretching 8.2 metres with partial returns on the west and east sides. The eastern wall preserves what appears to be the southern jamb of a doorway, with traces of what might have been a guard room just inside. These stone remnants are surrounded by mounds of rubble, marking the southwestern corner of what was once a much larger fortified complex.

The tower sits within a rectangular bawn, a defensive courtyard typical of Irish castle architecture, whose grass-covered foundations can still be traced in the landscape. The enclosed area measures approximately 55 metres east to west and 46 metres north to south, with evidence of additional structures once standing within these protective walls. Archaeological surveys have mapped out these foundations, providing a clearer picture of the castle’s original layout despite its ruined state.

The castle’s history connects to the turbulent politics of 16th-century Ireland. Originally a Condon family stronghold, it was granted to the Hyde family in 1588, marking a change in ownership typical of the period’s shifting allegiances and land transfers. The castle’s eventual abandonment left it vulnerable to dismantling; both stones and oak rafters from the structure were repurposed around 250 metres southeast for the construction of Manning House, ensuring that elements of the medieval fortress lived on in a newer dwelling. Today, visitors can explore these atmospheric ruins and trace the outlines of a once-formidable defensive structure that watched over the Funshion River valley for centuries.
