In the boggy uplands of Málainn Mhóir, County Donegal, a modest stone structure emerges from the heather-covered ridge, first documented by Norman Moore in 1872.

This ancient cist, located east of a notable cluster of portal tombs in the townland, consists of a roofstone sheltering a small chamber measuring approximately one metre north to south and 1.3 metres east to west. The structure remains open to the north, whilst single upright stones form its eastern, southern and western sides. The substantial roofstone, measuring 1.8 metres east to west and at least 1.1 metres north to south, rests atop these supports, with a carefully placed pad-stone helping to bridge the junction between the eastern and southern stones.

The construction shows intriguing details that hint at its original design and purpose. The northern end of the roofstone tilts slightly upward whilst the southern end disappears into the earth, and the floor of the cist lies no more than 0.6 metres below the underside of the roofing slab. Several additional stones around the structure suggest it may have been more elaborate than it first appears; two set stones stand just 0.3 metres west of the open northern end, with the larger eastern stone measuring 0.7 by 0.4 metres, both rising to 0.5 metres in height. Another stone, the tallest at the site at 1.1 metres high, stands approximately 1.3 metres to the south.

These outlying stones may represent the remnants of a kerb that once defined the monument’s boundaries, and a depression in the ground level about one metre west of these possible kerbstones suggests the presence of an ancient mound, now largely absorbed back into the landscape. The site forms part of National Monument no. 139, one of several protected megalithic structures in this area of Donegal that speak to the region’s rich prehistoric heritage. Though modest compared to its grander portal tomb neighbours, this small cist offers a glimpse into the diverse burial practices and monument-building traditions of Ireland’s ancient inhabitants.
