On sloping pasture toward the head of the Carnowen River valley, about 150 metres west of Binnadoo Hill's rocky slope, lies a puzzling megalithic monument that has confounded archaeologists for generations.

The heavily ruined and overgrown structure consists of a sub-oval cairn stretching 27.5 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 12 metres across at its widest point. Rising to about 1.5 metres at its highest, the cairn appears to have been disturbed over the centuries, with some stones, particularly at the northern end, seemingly dumped there in more recent times. When antiquarian Fagan examined the site in the 1840s, he noted that the remains seemed to have been enclosed by upright stones ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 metres high, though these are no longer clearly visible.

Within the northern section of the mound, the remains of a narrow gallery run roughly east to west for about seven metres. The southern side preserves four stone slabs whilst the northern side has just two stones set 4.6 metres apart. A distinctive gable-shaped stone at the western end likely served as a backstone, whilst two opposed stones at the eastern end, standing a metre apart and leaning slightly inward, may have functioned as jambs. South of the gallery runs a curious line of slabs pitched southward that appears to have acted as a kerb, retaining the cairn material between itself and the gallery; the cairn level north of this feature stands noticeably higher than that to the south.

The monument’s true nature remains tantalisingly unclear. Whilst the gallery, with its opposed jambs and gabled backstone, bears hallmarks of a court tomb, the presence of additional structural elements complicates any straightforward interpretation. Fagan documented two ‘graves’ at the site in the 1840s, claiming there had originally been more, with one measuring 6.5 metres long and varying between 0.9 and 2.4 metres wide. Various set stones scattered throughout the structure hint at additional chambers or architectural features whose purposes have been lost to time. Until further archaeological investigation can be undertaken, this enigmatic monument in the Donegal countryside remains officially unclassified, a stone riddle waiting to be solved.
