Megalithic tomb, An Cheapach, Co. Donegal

Hidden in the boggy landscape about 800 metres north of the coastal cliffs between Teelin Bay and Carrigan Head lies a mysterious megalithic structure that locals call 'Uaigh an Fhada'.

Megalithic tomb, An Cheapach, Co. Donegal

This ancient monument sits just south of a steep rocky ridge, with views stretching towards the coast whilst low hills frame the remaining horizons. The tomb, if that’s indeed what it is, consists of a stone chamber roughly 3.5 metres long and 2 metres wide, nestled within a grass-covered mound that measures about 11 metres north to south and 10.5 metres east to west. Later field walls have been built right across the site, with one running directly along the eastern side of the chamber itself.

The chamber’s construction reveals intriguing details about its ancient builders. The eastern side features several standing stones, or orthostats, ranging from 20cm to just over a metre in height, whilst the western side preserves three stones with what appears to be a small corbel stone resting atop one of them. At the southern end, two set stones mark what might be the original back of the structure; one a tall flat-topped slab standing 90cm high, the other slightly lower with a gabled outline and, rather curiously, the letters ‘TC’ spelled out in concrete on its top, presumably a much later addition. The northern end has a gap about 90cm wide that might represent an original entrance, though centuries of weathering and disturbance make this uncertain.

Archaeologists have puzzled over this monument’s exact classification. Initially listed as a court tomb, closer examination revealed that whilst it shares certain features with such structures, including the bellied outline of its eastern side and what might be entrance jambs, it lacks enough defining characteristics to confirm this classification. The two stones at the southern end could represent a jamb and sill arrangement typical of court tombs, but without more definitive evidence, this intriguing megalithic monument must remain officially unclassified, adding to the mystery of Ireland’s prehistoric landscape.
