This ancient megalithic structure, now considerably damaged by time, consists of what appears to have been a two-chambered gallery with a court at its northeastern end. The entire monument rests within a grass-covered mound measuring approximately 11.5 metres north to south and 15 metres east to west, rising about a metre at its highest point. Scattered across the cairn’s surface are numerous displaced stones, some partially buried, hinting at the tomb’s original, more complete form.

The court area retains only fragments of its original design, with a single courtstone surviving at the northern edge and an arc of three contiguous stones marking the southern boundary. The gallery itself, originally about 5.5 metres long and up to 1.9 metres wide, shows evidence of having been divided into two chambers. This division is marked by a narrowing of the passage created by strategically placed stones; two sidestones on the northern side and one askew stone on the southern side. The inner chamber is defined by two stones on each side, all standing between 60 and 65 centimetres high, and terminates in a distinctive flat-topped backstone with sloping sides.

Archaeological surveys of the site, conducted from the mid-19th century through to the late 20th century, have documented this monument as part of Ireland’s rich megalithic heritage. The tomb at Doochill North represents a typical court tomb design, where the deceased would have been interred in the gallery chambers after rituals performed in the semi-circular court area. Despite its ruined state, with many stones displaced and the structure partially filled with cairn material, the monument continues to offer valuable insights into Neolithic burial practices in northwestern Ireland.
