The monument sits on level ground with the craggy slopes of Knockalla rising to the west, whilst eastward the land drops away towards Lough Swilly, visible some two kilometres in the distance. The remains, though greatly deteriorated, consist of a gallery approximately 6.5 metres long with what appears to be the western arm of a court at its northern end. The entire structure rests within a grass-covered stone mound, now barely half a metre high and measuring roughly 15 by 14 metres.
What survives today are fragments of the original design; two probable courtstones mark where the court once stood, with the eastern stone appearing to have done double duty as an entrance jamb. The gallery itself retains only three orthostats, two on the western side and one on the eastern, their positioning suggesting the space may have been divided into at least two chambers. The stones lean at various angles now, some with broken tops indicating they once stood taller, whilst a displaced slab lies nearby, perhaps fallen from its original position centuries ago. Interestingly, one of the western stones displays a sloping outer face that would have been perfectly suited to support corbelling, a construction technique common in these ancient tombs.
Historical records from the Ordnance Survey Revision Name Book of 1849-50 confirm the monument was already in its current ruined state by the mid-19th century, suggesting its deterioration occurred long before modern times. The site has been documented by various antiquarians and archaeologists over the years, though some confusion has persisted about its exact townland location, with early sources incorrectly placing it in Carrowreagh rather than its actual location. Despite its ruined condition, the tomb remains an important example of Donegal’s court tomb tradition, one of many megalithic monuments that dot this landscape and speak to the sophisticated burial practices of Ireland’s prehistoric communities.
