Megalithic tomb, Islandroy Barr Or Drumfin, Co. Donegal

First recorded on the 1848-9 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, this enigmatic monument consists of a single upright stone measuring 2.8 metres tall, positioned near the eastern edge of what appears to be a deliberately excavated hole. The excavation, which measures 4 metres north to south, 1.8 metres east to west, and half a metre deep, seems to have been dug sometime after the mid-19th century; according to the OS Revision Name Book from that period, the stone was nearly swallowed by the encroaching bog.

Local tradition has long associated this stone with Fionn Mac Cumhaill, the legendary warrior of Irish mythology, claiming it marks his final resting place. The site’s name on historical maps reflects this folklore connection, though modern archaeological assessment suggests otherwise. Despite initial assumptions that the stone might have formed part of a megalithic tomb, current evidence doesn’t support this classification. The exposed portion of the slab, standing 0.7 metres above ground with a thickness of 0.45 metres, offers few clues about its original purpose or whether it was ever part of a larger structure.

The mystery deepens when considering the site’s history; whilst the bog once threatened to completely obscure this ancient marker, someone clearly thought it worth the effort to excavate around it, preserving its visibility for future generations. Whether this stone represents a genuine prehistoric monument, a boundary marker, or something else entirely remains uncertain, making it one of those tantalising archaeological puzzles that dot the Irish landscape, where mythology and prehistory often blur into one another.
