In the townland of Kinnagoe, County Donegal, there once existed a mysterious feature marked on early Ordnance Survey maps that has since vanished without a trace.

The 1834 OS 6-inch map labelled it as ‘Giant’s Grave’, a name that typically suggests the presence of a megalithic tomb. However, when surveyors compiled their Name Book that same year, they could only note that the name referred to “some stones” without providing any further details. By the time later editions of the map were produced, even this cryptic reference had disappeared, leaving only the tantalising place name as evidence that something of archaeological interest may have once stood here.

The antiquarian William Copeland Borlase, writing in 1897, attempted to shed light on this enigmatic site by noting two nearby features that appeared on the same early map sheet. One was simply marked as ‘Carn’ in neighbouring Ballynakeeloge townland, which has since been identified as a small cairn. The other, rather dramatically named ‘Split Rock’, sat at a mountain peak where three townlands converged: Ballynakeeloge, Fallask and Connaghkinnagoe. Despite its evocative name, this latter feature was almost certainly a natural rock formation rather than anything created by human hands, and like the Giant’s Grave itself, it too disappeared from subsequent map editions.

Today, the site remains classified as an unclassified megalithic tomb in archaeological surveys, though this designation rests entirely on that single cartographic reference from 1834. Whether the Giant’s Grave was a genuine prehistoric monument that was destroyed in the 19th century, perhaps its stones repurposed for field walls or building materials, or simply a collection of natural boulders that local tradition had invested with ancient significance, we may never know. The location serves as a reminder of how much archaeological heritage may have been lost in Ireland before systematic recording began, surviving only as ghost entries in old maps and survey books.
