High on Croaghan Hill in County Donegal, at an elevation of 724 feet, sits an enigmatic grass-covered mound that has puzzled archaeologists for decades.

The monument occupies the highest point of the hillfort, offering commanding views across the landscape in every direction, including westward towards a cluster of ancient tombs in Kilmonaster Middle townland some 2.6 kilometres away. Measuring 21 metres north to south and 17.5 metres east to west, with a height of 3 metres, this substantial earthwork has been crowned with an Ordnance Survey trigonometrical pillar that marks its summit.

Investigations into the mound’s composition have been limited to examining exposed sections; a hole 1.2 metres deep on the western slope and a smaller opening on the eastern side reveal a mixture of earth and stones. While the monument’s exact nature remains undetermined, several factors point towards it potentially housing a passage tomb similar to those found elsewhere in the region. Its considerable size, circular outline, prominent hilltop position, and proximity to other known passage tombs all suggest it may belong to Ireland’s remarkable collection of Neolithic monuments.

The site has drawn scholarly attention since the mid-19th century, first noted by Fagan between 1845 and 1848, and has since been documented in numerous archaeological surveys including the comprehensive Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Protected under a preservation order since 1987, the monument continues to intrigue researchers who hope future investigations might finally reveal whether this imposing mound conceals yet another example of Ireland’s sophisticated prehistoric burial architecture.
