Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Eskaheen, Co. Donegal

Three kilometres northwest of Muff village, on boggy ground near the lower slopes of Eskaheen Mountain, stands a remarkable portal tomb that offers sweeping views south along the inner reaches of Lough Foyle.

The monument consists of a chamber nestled within a long cairn that stretches 25 metres from east to west, reaching its broadest point of 14 metres at the rounded western end before tapering to less than 5 metres at the eastern extremity. Though partially covered by a thin layer of peat and crossed by a farm track at its eastern end, the cairn still reveals sizeable stones throughout its structure, rising to a maximum height of 0.7 metres on the southern side.

The chamber itself, which opens to the west-northwest, measures approximately 2 metres in length and up to 1.4 metres in width. Its most striking feature is an enormous roofstone, measuring 5 metres long and up to 3.7 metres wide, which has dramatically slipped from its original position. This massive capstone, reaching 1.5 metres in thickness at its centre, now rests at an angle; its northern edge has dropped to the ground whilst the southern side remains elevated. The collapse has broken the northern portal stone and caused both entrance stones to lean southward, though whether their skewed alignment relative to the chamber’s axis is original or resulted from this displacement remains uncertain.

Despite the dramatic shift of the roofstone, much of the chamber’s structure remains intact. Single stones form each side wall, both leaning inward with flat inner faces, whilst a gabled backstone provides closure at the eastern end. The construction shows sophisticated building techniques, with superimposed pad stones or corbels overlying the junction of the northern sidestone and backstone, and evidence of similar corbelling on the southern side, where a large slab that appears to be a slipped corbel now leans against the outer face. The monument has been known by various names over the years, including the intriguing ‘Morton God’ dolmen, and continues to stand as a testament to the engineering skills of Ireland’s Neolithic builders.
