Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Kilclooney More, Co. Donegal

In the rough pastures of County Donegal, about 6 kilometres north-northwest of Ardara village, stands a small megalithic chamber known locally as 'Dermot and Grania's Bed'.

Megalithic tomb - portal tomb, Kilclooney More, Co. Donegal

This evocative name, recorded on pre-publication Ordnance Survey field maps from the 1840s, links the monument to the legendary lovers from Irish mythology. The structure sits on wettish, uneven ground dotted with rocky outcrops and glacial erratics, roughly 1.6 kilometres north of Ballinreavy Strand at the inner reaches of Loughros More Bay.

The monument consists of a modest roofed chamber measuring just 1.45 metres long by 1.2 metres wide, built into a grass-covered oval mound that stretches 11 metres east to west. The chamber’s construction is remarkably simple; single stones form each side, with a gabled backstone closing the rear and only the western portal stone still standing. The massive capstone that forms the roof is particularly striking, measuring 2 metres long and tapering from 1.5 metres wide at the front to a point beyond the back of the chamber. When Thomas Fagan visited in 1847, he found the monument in essentially the same condition as today, with patches of peat on the cairn suggesting it had once been substantially buried in bog.

While classified as a portal tomb, this monument presents some unusual features that make archaeologists somewhat cautious about the designation. The surviving portal stone is exceptionally small at just 0.6 metres high, and oddly, the western sidestone overlaps it completely; an arrangement rarely seen in typical portal tombs. Several displaced stones lie scattered about, including one lying across the outer part of the chamber, whilst various loose boulders surround the site. Despite its modest size and somewhat ambiguous classification, this ancient structure offers a tangible connection to Ireland’s Neolithic past, standing quietly in the Donegal landscape much as it has for thousands of years.
