On the eastern edge of Doagh Isle peninsula, about 500 metres north of Trawbreaga Bay, sits a remarkably preserved wedge tomb that offers a glimpse into Ireland's Neolithic past.

The monument occupies a patch of pasture dotted with rock outcrops, with the land rising gradually northward to Crockmore hill whilst a line of hills limits the southern view. Dating from roughly 2500 to 2000 BC, this ancient burial chamber displays the characteristic wedge shape that gives these tombs their name; wider and taller at the western entrance, narrowing and lowering towards the eastern end.

The gallery itself measures just 2.8 metres long, tapering from 1.3 metres wide at the west to 0.95 metres at the east. Single stone slabs form the sides and back, whilst a massive roofstone caps the entire structure. What makes this particular tomb intriguing is the hour-glass shaped perforation bored through the centre of the western closing stone, created by drilling inward from both faces until they met in the middle. Whether this feature was part of the original design or added later remains a mystery, though its central position along the monument’s axis suggests it may have held ritual significance. The tomb is surrounded by outer walling and sits within a heel-shaped mound measuring 6.7 metres long.

The construction shows remarkable precision for its age, with the gallery stones carefully positioned and the outer wall incorporating several orthostats of varying heights. A facade stone links the outer walling to the southern end of the entrance, whilst the entire structure demonstrates the sophisticated building techniques employed by Ireland’s prehistoric communities. Despite millennia of weathering, the tomb remains largely intact, offering visitors a tangible connection to the island’s ancient inhabitants who chose this windswept peninsula as a final resting place for their dead.
