The monument consists of a raised circular platform, measuring roughly 36 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, surrounded by an impressive earthwork defence system. A substantial bank made of earth and stone, ranging from 0.75 to 1.65 metres in height and about 7 metres wide, encircles the central area. Remnants of stone facing can still be seen on the inner side of this bank, suggesting a more sophisticated construction than simple earthen defences.

The site’s most distinctive feature is its water-filled fosse, or defensive ditch, which runs around the outside of the bank. This broad channel, approximately 7 metres wide and varying in depth from half a metre to 1.5 metres, is fed by a small stream that flows adjacent to the southern edge of the monument. A 3-metre gap in the northeast section of the bank likely marks the original entrance to the enclosure, where visitors or residents would have crossed the water barrier, possibly via a bridge or causeway.

The combination of the stream-fed fosse and the monument’s sheltered position within a natural hollow strongly suggests this was indeed a moated site, a type of defended homestead popular amongst Anglo-Norman settlers and Gaelic Irish lords during the medieval period. These sites typically date from the 13th to 15th centuries and served as both defensive structures and status symbols, with the water-filled moat providing protection whilst also demonstrating the wealth and engineering capability of its builders.
