This moated site, measuring approximately 36 metres north to south and 35 metres east to west, presents itself as a raised platform surrounded by defensive features typical of medieval Irish fortified homesteads. The scarped edge drops about 1.5 metres to a fosse, or defensive ditch, which runs around the perimeter with a base width of 3 metres and a depth of roughly 0.75 metres.

The site’s defences are further enhanced by an external bank that survives particularly well along the northwestern to north-northeastern sections, standing about a metre high on the interior side and 0.7 metres on the exterior. Modern field boundaries have followed the ancient lines of the monument; a north-south field boundary and drain trace the path of the old fosse from the northeast to southeast corners, whilst another boundary aligns with the outer edge of the fosse at the northwest corner.

Today, the interior of this medieval earthwork remains overgrown and inaccessible, preserving its mysteries beneath a tangle of vegetation. Such moated sites were typically constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries, often serving as fortified farmsteads for Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families. The substantial earthworks at Ahaveheen suggest this was once home to someone of considerable local importance, though without excavation, the specific details of its occupation remain hidden beneath centuries of accumulated earth and greenery.
