In the reclaimed pastures of Ardrahin, County Limerick, aerial photography has revealed what appears to be a medieval moated site, hidden beneath the surface of the landscape.

Moated site, Ardrahin, Co. Limerick

Located about 40 metres south of the River Aherlow, which forms the townland boundary with Galbally, this rectangular enclosure measures approximately 35 metres north to south and 45 metres east to west. Though it doesn’t appear on any of the Ordnance Survey Ireland’s historical maps, the site first caught the attention of archaeologists in 1984 when examining aerial photographs taken for the Bórd Gáis Éireann gas pipeline project running from Curraleigh West to Limerick.

The enclosure’s outline becomes particularly visible through different imaging techniques taken over the decades. In photographs from 2011 to 2013, the rectangular shape manifests as an area defined by rushes; a telltale sign of different drainage patterns in the soil that often indicates buried archaeological features. More recent Google Earth imagery from September 2019 shows the site outlined by drainage ditches, whilst other orthoimages reveal cropmarks that further support the interpretation of this as a levelled moated site.

Just 100 metres to the south lies the site of Killenellig Church, suggesting this area held significance during the medieval period when such moated sites were typically constructed. These earthwork enclosures, often surrounded by water-filled ditches, were commonly built by Anglo-Norman settlers and wealthy landowners between the 13th and 14th centuries as fortified homesteads. Though now only visible from above, this hidden rectangular feature offers a glimpse into the medieval landscape of County Limerick, preserved beneath centuries of agricultural use.
