This rectangular enclosure, measuring 48 metres east to west and 43 metres north to south, is defined by substantial earthworks that have survived centuries of agricultural activity. The site’s most prominent feature is its flat-bottomed moat, which runs along the eastern and southern sides with a width of 6 metres and depth of 1.5 metres, though by 1987 the western and northern sections had been filled in.

The defensive nature of the site is further emphasised by an earthen bank along the northern edge, standing 4 metres wide and 0.4 metres high. Perhaps most intriguing is the substantial mound positioned at the southwest corner; with a base diameter of 13 metres tapering to just 3 metres at its summit and rising to a height of 3 metres, this feature dominates the site. Local tradition has rather confusingly dubbed this mound ‘the moat’, though it likely served as either a watchtower platform or the base of a more substantial defensive structure.

Today, grass and scrub cover the entire area, softening the military edges of what was once a formidable defensive position. These moated sites, common throughout medieval Ireland, typically date from the 13th to 15th centuries and were often associated with Anglo-Norman settlement patterns. They served both defensive and status purposes, marking the presence of significant landholders whilst providing protection in what could be uncertain times.
