In the wet pastures of Ballinscoola, County Limerick, a rectangular earthwork marks the location of a medieval moated site, its outline still visible from above after centuries of agricultural use.

The monument sits on the floodplain of the Camoge River, which forms the townland boundary with Kilcullane about 182 metres to the east. Though this historic site never appeared on Ordnance Survey Ireland’s historical maps, it couldn’t hide from the camera’s eye; aerial photography from the Bruff survey in 1986 first revealed it as a distinctive cropmark in a long, narrow field.

The earthwork measures roughly 37 metres from east-northeast to west-southwest and 35 metres from north-northwest to south-southeast, defined by what appears to be the remains of a water-filled defensive ditch, or fosse, that would have once surrounded the site. These traces are clearest along the northern and southern edges, where the old boundaries have survived despite modern land drains and watercourses cutting through the improved pasture. Various aerial images taken between 2003 and 2018 continue to show the monument’s rectangular footprint, a ghostly impression of medieval life preserved in the landscape.

Moated sites like this one were typically built by Anglo-Norman colonists or wealthy Irish families during the 13th and 14th centuries, serving as fortified farmsteads in the countryside. The moat, usually water-filled, provided both defence and drainage whilst the raised platform inside would have held timber or stone buildings. Today, whilst cattle graze where medieval settlers once lived, the earthwork remains a tangible link to Ireland’s complex medieval past, quietly enduring in the Limerick countryside.
