This square enclosure measures 48 metres on each side and is surrounded by substantial earthen banks that rise 1.3 metres on the interior side and about a metre on the exterior. These broad, overgrown banks are complemented by an external fosse, or defensive ditch, that runs around the perimeter with a flat bottom approximately one metre deep.

The site shows evidence of careful medieval planning, with a causewayed entrance positioned roughly halfway along the eastern bank, allowing controlled access to the interior. There’s also a break in the bank at the southeastern corner, though whether this was an original feature or developed later remains unclear. The fosse, now dry, may once have been flooded by water diverted from nearby streams; a field fence extending northeast from the northwestern corner possibly marks the line of an old watercourse that channelled water from a larger stream about 80 metres east of the site.

Today, the interior remains level and grass-covered, offering few clues to the structures that once stood within these protective earthworks. Moated sites like this one were typically constructed by Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous tenant farmers during the 13th and 14th centuries, serving as fortified homesteads that combined defensive features with agricultural functionality. The site was catalogued by historian Barry in 1981 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, ensuring its significance to local medieval history is properly recorded and preserved.
