Hidden in the pastures of Ballyduboy, County Wexford, lies a medieval moated site that has all but vanished from view.

This rectangular earthwork, measuring roughly 70 metres on each side, sits at the northern end of a small ridge, with the Irish Sea just 350 metres to the southeast. Though nothing remains visible at ground level today, the site’s distinctive outline was clearly marked on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map as an embanked or moated enclosure.

Moated sites like this one were typically built between the 13th and 14th centuries, often serving as fortified farmsteads for Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families. The moat, which would have been water-filled, provided both defence and drainage whilst the raised platform inside housed timber or stone buildings. These sites represent an important phase of Ireland’s medieval landscape, when new agricultural practices and settlement patterns were transforming the countryside.

The Ballyduboy site was first catalogued by Terry Barry in 1977 as part of his comprehensive survey of Irish moated sites, and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford published in 1996. Whilst the earthworks have been levelled by centuries of farming, the location remains archaeologically significant; beneath the peaceful pasture likely rest the foundations of buildings, remnants of daily life, and clues to how people lived and worked in medieval Wexford.
