The river flows northeast to southwest along the northern edge of this medieval earthwork, which has seen better days. Time and neglect have taken their toll on the western and northwestern sections, leaving them badly damaged, whilst the southern and eastern sides remain the best preserved portions of the site.

The interior space, measuring roughly 17.5 metres across, lies behind an earth and stone bank that still shows traces of its original stone facing on the outer wall. The bank itself is about 1.3 metres wide, rising 0.4 metres on the inner side and nearly a metre on the external face. Today, thick scrub has overtaken much of the interior, making it difficult to explore properly. When archaeologist Barry surveyed the site in 1977, he documented several features that have since vanished or become unrecognisable, including a water channel, or leat, at the northwest corner that once connected the defensive fosse to the river.

The fosse, a water-filled ditch that would have been about 8 metres wide, formed part of the site’s medieval defences. Barry also noted that the corners of this moat were notably raised, though these distinctive features are no longer visible today. Such moated sites were typically built by Anglo-Norman settlers or wealthy landowners during the 13th and 14th centuries, serving as fortified farmsteads or minor manor houses in the Irish countryside. Despite its deteriorated condition, this Ballyhane site remains an intriguing reminder of medieval settlement patterns in North Tipperary.
