Moated site, Ballyhobin, Co. Limerick

In the countryside near Bruff in County Limerick, a substantial earthwork sits quietly in improved wet pasture, about 30 metres west of a watercourse.

This moated site at Ballyhobin takes the form of a large subrectangular earthwork, measuring approximately 70 metres north to south and 60 metres east to west. Though it doesn't appear on the Ordnance Survey Ireland's historic maps, aerial photography has revealed its impressive scale and distinctive shape.

The site first caught archaeological attention in 1986 during the Bruff aerial photographic survey, which identified it as a substantial earthwork feature. More recent technology has continued to document the monument; Digital Globe orthophotos from 2011 to 2013 and Google Earth imagery from April 2006 both clearly show the subrectangular outline of the earthwork. Another enclosure, catalogued as LI023-202, lies just 75 metres to the east, suggesting this area may have been home to multiple defensive or settlement structures.

Moated sites like this one typically date from the Anglo-Norman period in Ireland, roughly the 13th to 14th centuries. These earthworks usually consisted of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled moat, providing both defence and status for their inhabitants. The wet pasture setting at Ballyhobin would have been ideal for maintaining the water levels in the surrounding moat, whilst the proximity to a watercourse would have provided additional water supply and possibly aided drainage when needed.
